COSA Showcase of Services The Rupert J. Smith Law Library is proud to participate in the Treasure Coast’s Council Of Social Agencies “Showcase of Services” on September 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. hosted by Treasure Health Hospice in Port St. Lucie County. The “Showcase” is a forum where we can inform other service providers of all the things we can do to help their clientele and, of course, vice versa. Last year, a woman came to the law library seeking help to force the return of her children to New Jersey when her husband refused to send them home after a routine visitation visit. Her first stop might have been the Clerk’s Office and she was sent next door to the library to help her select the forms to file. It was clear to us that her more immediate problem was that her last dime was in her |

gas tank, she had no place to stay and no food. Because of COSA we knew of several organizations that might be able to help her. After getting her settled with shelter over her head and food in her stomach, we could help her the problem that brought her into the library. If the situation had evolved in the opposite order and she first came to the shelter, by participating in events like the “Showcase,” I’d like to think the shelter would have known to send her to us once her immediate needs were filled. Law Library Board of Trustees member, Jim Wilder, has been active in COSA for many years and knows how to help direct our efforts in the larger community. |

Drive to Work Project Florida Rural Legal Services has created a “Drive to Work Project” for St. Lucie citizens who have suspended licenses due to unpaid court debts and fees. The fines and costs may be relatively small but can seem insurmountable when getting to work is a job in itself. If you know of someone in need, please have them call 1-800-277-7680.
