Trustees Absent:                   Burton C. Conner, Paula A. Lewis and Anthony Guettler

Others Attending:                  Nora J. Everlove, Librarian via speaker phone and Lynn T. Atkinson, Secretary

This was a regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Rupert J. Smith Law Library of St. Lucie County and although there were not enough Trustees present to conduct an official meeting there was some discussion had by the attending Trustees and the Law Librarian.  Mr. Walker requested that Ms. Atkinson prepare a transcription of the discussion and that hopefully at the next meeting a motion can be adopted annexing these as an addendum to the minutes.

Mr. Walker reported that the Friends of the Library are  sponsoring a series of Florida Bar CLEs, in the Law Library, the first such to take place on December 15, 2006, involving a basic real estate video.   Mr. Walker reported that there will be a series of such CLEs taking place at the Law Library.

Ms. Everlove joined the meeting by speaker phone.  Mr. Walker extended the Trustees condolences at the loss of her husband.  Mr. Walker advised Ms. Everlove that the website is not current and needs to be updated.  The minutes, trustees and the listing of publications are not current.  Ms. Everlove said that she would do a general update of the website.

Mr. Walker addressed getting out the word on the new hours of the Law Library.   Ms. Everlove stated that for the sake of expediency she has delegated the task of branding a logo and a two-color flyer to advertise the extended hours to Wanda Barrett (phonetic) who has done a lot of the artistic work, including the webpage.  Ms. Everlove is hopeful that she will have something back from Ms. Barrett in a couple of days and they will start in on that.  Also, Ms. Everlove needs to get with Lt. Hardie to confirm coverage on this.  Ms. Everlove stated that for practical purposes the additional hours should begin after the first of the year.  Mr. Walker and Mr. Wilder agreed.

Ms. Everlove reported that the Law Library is hosting its first CLE Program on December 15, 2006.  There are a few registrations already.   Mr. Walker inquired as to whether or not Ms. Everlove had done anything on the syllabus.  Ms. Everlove reported that she had not been able to do anything on it yet.

Mr. Walker inquired as to Ms. Everlove’s attendance at the Florida State County Court Law Libraries Meeting and inquired as to anything that might be of profound interest.  Ms. Everlove reported that it was a lovely meeting in Tallahassee, Justice Parenti welcomed everyone.  Ms. Everlove stated that there are a lot of law libraries left standing around the state and we are one of the lucky few who are fully funded.  The parking ticket stream of revenue created quite a bit of interest.  There was a lot of discussion on balancing online and print collections and a lot of discussion on the educational responsibilities of county law libraries, especially in counties where there is no law school.   This was justification for print because it is more difficult to explain, especially to the public how legal materials are organized when you are doing it solely electronically.  It is hard to explain the purpose of a case digest when it is done electronically.  Shepardizing looks like a foreign language unless you know what Shepardizing does and how it’s organized.    Ms. Everlove stated that she had never heard it expressed exactly in those terms although they had often discussed around those issues.  This time is was put very succinctly by a couple of the Federal Court Librarians.

Mr. Walker inquired if Ms. Everlove had heard anything further on the courthouse renovation.  Ms. Everlove reported that she had not.  Mr. Walker asked Ms. Atkinson if she had heard anything.  Ms. Atkinson reported that she thought that a new set of plans had recently been delivered to Judge Conner, but she was not sure what they were.

Discussion was had concerning the new judicial portrait.  Ms. Atkinson reported that Mr. Guettler had advised her that the Port St. Lucie Bar Association would pay for half of the portrait.  Ms. Atkinson further advised now that the Port St. Lucie Bar Association had committed to pay for half of the cost of the portrait that Judge Conner would begin to work on getting this together.  She further advised that this would probably not happen until after the beginning of the new year due to holidays, vacations and the changing of judicial assignments.  Mr. Walker stated that we should get a date for everyone to show up for the portrait and then approach a photographer.

Mr. Walker inquired about an update of the tri-fold flyer for the Friends of Law Library.  Ms. Everlove stated that she will get an updated flyer together.

Mr. Wilder inquired as to whether or not there was any mold in the Port St. Lucie Law Library.  Ms. Everlove reported that the last she heard there was no mold reported.   She stated that she would have Merrilyn inspect the library again.  Mr. Wilder again offered his help with the flyers.

Discussion was had concerning speakers for the Law Library.  Mr. Wilder reported that a speaker is scheduled at the Council of Social Agencies general meeting on Wednesday, May 16th at the COSA general meeting, which is at 8:00 a.m. at the Health Department on Milner Road.  This would be approximately a fifteen minute presentation.  Mr. Wilder asked that someone who has a lot more experience than he give the presentation.  There are generally between thirty and fifty social agencies represented at a COSA general meeting.
